What is a TMJ Disorder?

Aches and pains along the sides of your face when chewing or opening and closing your mouth may be a sign of a TMJ disorder. This is the result of a problem with your temporomandibular joint, which is the joint that connects your lower jaw to your skull. You’ll first notice TMJ issues if you have pain in your face or jaw. You also may hear a popping or clicking sound when you open and close your mouth and start experiencing headaches, dizziness, hearing loss, or ringing in your ears. In severe cases, your jaw may lock open or shut.

TMJ disorders may result from a temporomandibular joint that is overworked. This may cause the joint to move out of position. Clenching or grinding of teeth may contribute to this, as can dental issues like an overbite. Your dentist is the person most likely to spot a TMJ disorder and best suited to provide the treatment you need.
